If “fit” means being the right gender or coming from the right pedigree, then you need to re-assess your criteria because it will not only create risk and hold back your success, it’s building your company on a poor ethical foundation.

  • Meritocracy: Does your culture uphold work performance above all else when it comes to growth, compensation, and promotional opportunities? (Note - performance includes the ability to effectively relate to others.)

  • Continuous Improvement: Does your company value ongoing improvement in itself and in its people? This will maximize your odds of success in the other three areas of people success.

Ideally, every new hire would embody all three qualities, receive unwavering support, and thrive under exceptional leadership in a perfectly aligned culture. But in the real world, finding that perfect fit is rare.
